Hinterland Bush Links was founded by Susie Duncan in 2011 after she undertook a fauna survey at Curramore Wildlife Sanctuary for the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. From the results of this survey, Susie could see how fragmentation of wildlife habitats was impacting native fauna. She had a vision to restore wildlife corridors across the landscape and set out to support landholders to protect and restore their own land through support from community volunteers and funding.

14 years on, Hinterland Bush Links is a thriving organisation employing two part-time staff (Aleisha Keating and Louise Court) to run its ongoing projects and programs. Our staff are supported by a dedicated group of community volunteers who assist with on-ground bush regeneration. Education is a key tenet to our work, we aim to empower landholders and others to undertake conservation work so they can continue Hinterland Bush Links’ mission to enhance biodiversity on their own properties and beyond.
We’ve been recently recognised for our contribution to the community and environment through co-winning the 2024 Sunshine Coast Biosphere Healthy Planet Award.
Hinterland Bush Links runs several successful projects and programs:
- The long-term Roving Restorers program sees community volunteers assist landholders with weeding and tree planting on their properties.
- The successful Koala Habitat project planted over 5000 trees for koala food and habitat, removed invasive weeds from koala habitat and developed educational resources for landholders.
- In the Mary River catchment, highly valued for its biodiversity, Hinterland Bush Links is treating invasive weed vines to improve riverine areas and water quality in the upper catchment through the Upper Mary Valley Weed Vine project.
